TexMex is an art form and its crown jewel is the taco. If you’re ever in San Antonio, you might hear people talk about Taco Taco, Torchy’s, or the crazy ginormous margs at Panchitos. However, Tacos El Regio--aka the greatest late night taco truck of my young existence--may not come up and that is a goddamn travesty.
I was first introduced to Tacos El Regio by a coworker and Trinity University student. The “taco truck outside of Hard Bodies” didn’t sound too appealing, but we can’t judge a book by its cover. Damn straight Tacos El Regio is outside the male strip club, Hard Bodies. Yes, that does indeed make for incredible people watching. Plus, the tacos are absolutely on point. Tacos (get corn tortillas!!) run about $6, but if you’re not starving go for the quesadillas which are a third the price of the tacos and have all of the benefits. I typically ordered the Pastor, but I’ve heard the vegetarian option is pretty choice, too.
Perhaps the best testament to their quality is the fact that we were all too bus eating (or tipsy, lbr) to take pictures of our food or the truck. I don’t miss San Antonio much, but I would make the trek again just for these tacos in a heartbeat. Go early (they open around 11 PM, but the line can start around 10:30 PM) & go often.
Check out Tacos El Regio on Yelp. If you're in San Antonio (Satantonio) and looking for a late night bite, you gotta go.
